2024-25

The course aims to introduce students to matters concerning the economic history of Byzantium.   
The course starts with a treatment of the passage from the economy of Late Antiquity to the medieval economy and its structures.  It then deals with sources of wealth in Byzantium, natural and human resources, the rural and urban economy, exchange, trade and markets and developments in coinage and Byzantine money.  The course ends with a comparison between the Byzantine economy and the economies of the states of the medieval west.  

This course examines both the rise and expansion and the decline and fall of the British Empire from 17th to the 21st centuries. Its main goal is to examine the issues that arise from occupation by an imperial power, both for the conquered and the conquerors. It shows the unsystematic fashion in which the empire expanded,  in which it was influenced both by chance, risk and venture and by political and social circumstances in Britain itself.

Στα πλαίσια του μαθήματος εξετάζονται ελληνικά κείμενα της βυζαντινής και τις οθωμανικής περιόδου που έχουν επιλεγεί από το διδάσκοντα ως κατάλληλα για διδακτική αξιοποίηση στα πλαίσια της διδασκαλίας της Βυζαντινής Ιστορίας και της Ιστορίας του Νέου Ελληνισμού. Σκοπός είναι να καλλιεργηθεί στους φοιτητές η δυνατότητα να προσεγγίζουν τις γραπτές πηγές και να καθορίζουν τι μπορεί να αξιοποιηθεί για διδακτική χρήση.
