: Social psychology forms perhaps the most basic branch of psychology. It cannot be taught in just one semester and so all university departments in Greece where the subject is taught it is taught over at least two semesters. The course covers half of the basic subject matter of social psychology. It covers the topics concerning explanations for human behavior at an interpersonal and intergroup level.
The course deals with the history of Roumelia (the Balkan Province) from the 14th to the 20th century. Particular attention is given to Thrace, which is the main area studied. Thrace was the heartland, nearest to Istanbul, the main city of the Balkan peninsula and played an important role in national movements and other developments during the period. The course also focusses on the issue of social mobility and the emergence of the Ottomans as new conquerors. Such social mobility changed the demographic composition of the area.
The main aim of the course is to introduce students to the concept of consumption in anthropology. Consumption studies have shown that the material world is not static and fixed. Instead, objects have their value and their histories and so the material world is part and parcel of any given society. To consume certain goods is a choice, a political act subject to several historical, economic and social conditions and norms. Thus consumption creates and recreates everyday politics. The course deals with various aspects of consumption and uses several ethnographic examples.
