The library of the Department of History and Ethnology is located on the first floor of the Department building and comprises the bookroom and the reading room. The Library contains about 30,000 volumes of Greek and foreign books and periodicals. About a thousand volumes are acquired annually, thanks to purchases and gifts.
The library also contains a collection of rare books, consisting of items donated or purchased at auctions.
Full academic staff, teaching personnel of any category, and specialized technical and laboratory staff, students and administrative personnel of the university are permitted to use the library. Books may be borrowed and photocopied, within the limits laid down by the law regarding copyright.
Two employees work were in the library, a librarian and a member of the administrative personnel.
The reading room is open every working day of the year, Monday and Wednesday from 8.00 a.m. – 8.00 p.m. and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. During examination periods, the library is open from Monday to Thursday from 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. and Friday, 8.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.
The reading room contains computers that allows users to perform searches in the library of the Department, in libraries of all the Departments of the Democritus University and in libraries linked through the Opac network. Users may search via the internet for books in these libraries at www.lib.duth.gr, for books in the Departmental library, and at http://opac.seab.gr/ for books in all other connected libraries.
