The image of the Turk in Modern Greek Fiction (19th-20th century)
The aim of the course is the research of the image of the Turk as national and religious “Other” in Modern Greek Fiction of the 19th and 20th century and the student's familiarity with the basic principles of the Imagology in LiteraryStudies. The study of ethnotypes (stereotypical attributions of national character) in the literature is an issue included in the theoretical frame of theCultural or Literary Imagology. The principal “Other” through the process of the identity construction of the modern Hellenism is undoubtedly the Turk, because as “otherness” is the mirror of the contemporary Greeks and vice versa. There are three periods of the representation of the Turk in Modern Greek Fiction: a) in the 19th century and the early 20th century the Turk is the long-standing enemy. b) from the 1930s generation until 1960s, despite the existence of the stereotypicalimage of the conqueror, uncivilized Turk, all the texts related with the Asia Minor Disasterand the exchange of populations go against the rhetoric of nationalism. c) after the 1960 and particularly after the period following the fall of the Greek military junta (1967–1974)until nowadays in the fiction with modern social repertoire are evident the concepts of the acceptance and the comprehension of the Turk as “Other”.
