The course offers basic information on archaeology for the beginning student. It deals with a range of subjects, including archaeology as a tool and source on the presence and activity of man in the world over time both during prehistoric times and during the historical period, that is in this case, during Classical and Medieval times, the birth and history of archaeology, methodology, ethnographic analogies and the theory and the Middle Range Theory, scientific support and techniques employed in archaeological research, such as surface surveys, excavation, post-excavation processing, dating, examination of provenance and function of finds), theory of data explanation and related parameters and variables relating to function and organization (e.g. in the context of intrasocial or intersocial space and the the related settlement pattern) and their historical dimension and social significance.
