Ιστορία της εκπαίδευσης στο ελληνικό κράτος

The first half of the course examines in summary form the education of Orthodox subjects of the Ottoman Empire and the nature of the education provided for them. Particular emphasis is laid upon the changes wrought by the Greek Enlightenment on education, resulting in the move from the 'Greek school' of the Church to the Greek school of the ethnos. The second part of the course offers an analysis of the progress of education from the foundation of the independent Greek nation-state to the present.
In particular, the course describes and analyses the various educational systems that have been employed over the years, their aims, the problems involved in applying them and the results they have brought. The course also examines the nature of the education and the reasons for particular choices behind it. The various educational reforms of the 20th century are examined and analysed, as are the reactions they provoked, in the shape of counterreforms. Particular emphasis is placed upon the language question and the consequences of the controversy surrounding language in education. The course concludes with the description of the pedagogical methods employed at various times by the Greek state and briefly examines the life and work of the most important Greek educationalists.
Students wishing to do the course should realize that it demands continuous study and the use of sources and requires assignments.
