PhD Study at the Department of History and Ethnology

Study for a PhD at the Department of History and Ethnology with a view to producing a substantial work of original research may be undertaken in any of the disciplines and academic fields that currently form part of the Department curriculum.
Eligibility : Holders of postgraduate degrees from a Greek university or from foreign universities officially recognized as equivalent may apply. Exceptionally, doctoral candidates can be accepted without a postgraduate degree, if they can demonstrate relevant research and/or publication activity (i.e. at least two peer-reviewed publications in the same field as the proposed thesis).
Applications : Twice a year, in October and February. The application should include a detailed CV and a thesis plan, describing the methodology and content and explaining the originality of the proposed research. The potential supervisor, drawn from the staff of the Department, should also be indicated.
Language : The thesis can be written in Greek, English, German, or French.
Duration : A minimum of three and a maximum of seven years, unless an extension is approved by the Department.
Supervision and Obligations : The thesis is supervised by a three-member committee and, upon completion, is examined by a seven-member jury, including the three supervising members of staff. Annual progress reports should be submitted to the department until the completion of the degree. Active PhD candidates are required to act as invigilators once per semester for undergraduate exams of the Department.
Fees : There are no fees for doctoral study.
PhD study can also be carried out in collaboration with one of the recognized Greek research centres or institutes.
